What’s going on, guys? We’re back this week with yet another Boujee Boss hack, this time shining a light on some of my fav self-help books! Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always been obsessed with reading books, but they were usually of the fictional sort. Ya know, books like The Babysitters Club, The Twilight Series, and basically anything by Meg Cabot. But when I got to college, specifically in my sophomore year, things took a turn. My uncle had given me a few books he was gifted but didn’t want (reading had never been his thing), and one of them changed the course of my life forever. Since then, self-development books have become a daily part of my routine, and I would be remiss if I didn’t share some of them with you. Let’s get started!
The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson
This is the beloved novel my uncle gave me that kicked off my love affair with self-help books. Olson bases his book off seven principles; relationships, health, happiness, personal development, finance, career, and impact. I actually used these principles as a daily guide of tasks for a while, and it helped tremendously. It’s very engaging and easy to follow, he shares a lot of personal stories, and even allows his family members to cover some chapters. This is a very great first read for people who are just entering the self-development realm! You can purchase a copy down below:

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team by Patrick Lencioni
This is a very interesting read, as it’s technically not nonfiction. The Five Dysfunctions of a Team is a business fable based on a very diverse team of organization leaders. My best friend, Shy-kyra lent me this book, and I was not disappointed! Lencioni establishes the five dysfunctions as absence of trust, fear of conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results. It is a must have for anyone who is involved in any sort of team (nonprofit, company, sports, etc.), which is basically everyone who is reading this post right now! If you’re looking for a book with straightforward feedback, and placements for a lot of self-reflections, then you’re in the right place! Buy now:

The 10x Rule by Grant Cardone
Okay, so my review of this particular book is a little different. As someone who tends to take advice to the extremes at times, this could be a dangerous read for those like me. I’m sure anyone who has heard of self-development books has heard of The 10x Rule. It’s been in the top ranks for years, and is highly recommended (which is why I bought it). However, it is very necessary to note that you should not take everything that is stated to heart (at least in my opinion), as it’s just unrealistic to maintain your sanity. I’ve garnered the ability to determine what advice fits me as an individual, and what doesn’t. I completely agree that 10x thoughts and 10x actions will get 10x results, but you cannot (and should not) be on 10, 24/7. Rest is essential, and although Cardone mentions that a few times throughout the book, it kind of gave me a whiplash with the other rules he was talking about. In other words, I felt like not enough emphasis was put on our human factor, so a naive person would take his advice and try to give 100% all day, every day, when it’s just not possible. You’re not lazy or entitled for taking a break to regroup. But now knowing this, you can go into reading with an awareness because despite my disagreement with a few things, there really are a lot of great tips in the book. You can try it out here:

Girl, Stop Apologizing by Rachel Hollis
As you all know from the must have podcasts post, I discovered Rachel Hollis through this book that I bought of the Walmart stands. I just fell in love with her straight forwardness, and how applicable her advice is. She not only hypes you up, but she gives solid step by step advice. Paraphrasing her own words, she got tired of paying all this money for conferences, getting hyped up, but still not knowing the basic business knowledge it took to get her business off the ground. Excitement can only last so long without the business intellect. So, if you’re ready to get both, click the link below:

The Bomb Life by Claire Sulmers
Last, but certainly not least, we have this gem that I’m almost finished reading. I’ve followed her brand for years (Fashion Bomb Daily) without knowing who was behind it all. It wasn’t until last week when I was listening to one of Myleik Teele’s old podcast episodes did I come to know the face behind the brand. They mentioned her book in the podcast, and I immediately bought the book off of amazon. For those of you who don’t know, I want to work in the fashion industry post-graduation, and aside from this blog, I also write for our university’s newspaper, so this is right up my alley. And I just love when self-development books are told from a story telling POV because it makes things more personal. I will definitely give an update when I’m finished, but until then, join the book club by clicking the link below:
